In the last few years, the education sector started to adapt its learning method to new technological and digital forms, it’s about e-learning. Europe’s digital transformation is pushing the education sector towards an increasingly digital environment, not only there are online classes available for those who didn’t attend the traditional study path such as a private university or night classes, but the digital evolution is replacing daily lessons from high-school to university.
The big change is in shifting the common school tools used by students to new digital ones and the old way of teaching from physical lessons to virtual ones.
Books and notebooks are replaced by tablets or e-books, blackboards by a multimedia projector, student’s documents, school records and essays are stored in educational digital platforms or in-cloud solutions, and professors are not physically present in the classroom, but they teach in video conferences and communicate with students through digital devices or even social media communities.
European Commission promotes the Digital Education Action Plan
European Commission embraced the digitalization of the education sector, due to several opportunities that it can bring to students, professors and to society in general. An educational digital approach can improve the flexibility of the scholastic framework, can inspire student’s creativity by leading them to face new challenges and to better improve technology know-how, can streamline unnecessary costs by adopting paperless solutions and by avoiding transfers for physical presence both for students and teachers.
The European Commission aims to prepare citizens to be digitally interconnected and trained by investing in technology in order to enhance the society’s educational level from a future perspective. The Digital Education Action Plan promotes measures to help the Member States and education and training institutions to seize the opportunities and meet the challenges presented by the digital scenario.
The Action Plan is composed of 11 actions collected under 3 priorities:
New Digital Education Action Plan after Covid-19
Due to Covid-19 crisis, the European Commission is expecting to adopt an updated Action Plan by the end of September 2020.
The aim is to gather citizens, institutions and organisations point of views about their personal experiences and expectations during this pandemic, in order to draft the next measures to take into consideration for the future of the education industry.
As a consequence of this crisis, the education sector has undergone few changes in a dramatic way, in the beginning, schools and universities had to close, but once the recovery has started, they had to adopt new forms of teaching and learning by exploiting the power of technology. E-learning has become the solution to fill the gap and to guarantee the continuity of the whole sector. Courses have been carried out remotely, any kind of activity and communication between students and professors have been done on digital platforms.
Due to Covid-19, tools such as language apps, virtual tutoring, video conferencing tools, online learning software and platforms, or cloud solutions used to archive documents, have significantly grown the use of education technology.
Technology as an embedded component of education.
Integrating technology to education enables students to achieve a higher level of study facilitated by matching digital tools to learning, by enhancing their technological knowledge and streamlining the method of study. Also, from the teachers and education professionals point of view, adopting a teaching approach based on digital solutions requires a new way of teaching.
Paradoxically, since the digital environment is part of the students’ everyday life, the physical distance and the remote learning between teachers and students helps them to better connect and communicate in a more efficient and effective way, via chat groups, video meetings, exams in videoconference; all the necessary school documents are digitally shared, this way of teaching makes it easier for teachers to grab student’s attention.
Benefits of Digital Education:
The role of Digital Identity in the Education field
Remote education means learning and teaching from home or from anywhere when courses and lessons are not carried out in the traditional system, digital platform and solutions are implemented, that means both for students and professors to log in with personal profiles which allows them to have access to school platforms or e-documents through user access with personal credentials and passwords.
In a difficult time like Covid-19 crisis, the education sector had to adapt and adopt digital solutions to ensure continuity to their activities. In order to protect data as safely as possible, to prevent breaches in school data, to ensure that student’s truthfulness and reliability, to attend a lesson, take an exam or to graduate, teachers adopted several solutions to verify students’ identity via videoconference tools.
Teachers prefer oral examinations than written tests so to recognize student identity and to be sure that the exam is carried out by the student themselves with no external help. Some professors ask students to prove through videoconferencing that they are not surrounded by other people or have school material under the laptop or any further factor that could compromise the exam.
Beyond video conference, our Euronovate Group disposes several tools that schools can adopt, to verify student’s identity, such as our digital platform based onboarding process which exploits biometric technology to verify user’s identity through face recognition on remote in real-time, or ENSoft suite, our e-Signature solution to validate school documents or authenticate and verbalize the completion of an exam, or our ALL-IN-ONE solution to manage digital documents, digital certificates, data storage, etc…
